5 Simple Ways to Decorate Like a Designer

Here are some ideas:

1. Don’t settle for the set.

Buying a matched set of any kind of furniture is probably one of the easiest ways to furnish a home, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with it. But designers know that breaking up a matched set and mixing pieces will create a more interesting and collected look.

For example, shake up a dining room by mixing and matching dining chairs.  Or, to make a living room more unique, break up a matched set of tables with a metal or painted piece.

2. Collect.

Not “settling for the set” definitely gives rooms a more collected look, but designers take it one step further… Leave room in your design plan to mix in an interesting flea market find, momentos from your travels, or a favorite one-of-a-kind family piece that will set your space apart.

3. Get out of the box.

Designers are creative by nature, and they’re usually not afraid to step out of the box or take a decorating “risk” to take a room from ordinary to oh-so-good.

If you’re not a designer, though, that may not come easy for you.   And you may think that those out-of-the-box ideas you see in the designer rooms won’t work for your home or budget. Don’t let that stop you.

Start with a small idea that’s out of your comfort zone to get used to the idea of taking a “risk”, and reinvent the idea within your space and budget to make it your own. Once you experience how much fun it can be, and how much you enjoy your space, you’ll be ready to try something else.

4. Play with paint.

Paint is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform a space. Whether it’s creating drama with contrast, making a space feel larger with lighter hues, or adding interest with creative paint treatments, designer rooms use paint to their advantage.

The options are endless, and changing it up when you tire of the look is as simple as pulling out the paint brush.

5. Customize.

We work hard to style furniture settings in our showrooms that are easy to love as-is, and we encourage scooping those looks right up.

But designers tend to like to tweak their furniture a bit by ordering custom pillows or changing up the sofa or chair color – in some cases, for the same price as the standard option.

Hmmmmm… something to consider.
