In celebration of Nelson Mandela Day 2016 on Monday 18 July, Hirsch Milnerton took out all the stops and cooked up one of Madiba’s favourite traditional dishes, Umsila Wenkomo which is the Xhosa translation of Oxtail Soup. Two and a half years ago, the man known as The Father of South Africa passed away on December 5 2013 and would have been 98 years old on Monday.
A simple yet extremely tasty version of oxtail soup, Umsila Wenkomo takes less than an hour to prepare (and a lot less time in a pressure cooker) You need meat, potato, beans, carrots and few basic spices.. Zwilling knives expertly sliced and the sturdy pots made quick work of the soup.
The icy wind outside blew the Hirsch customer right in the front door and straight to the belly-warming Umsila Nkomo. Young customer Miss Pietersen was approached by Hirsch PRO Monique and given a brief rundown on this traditional dish, as she sampled the steaming soup.
