I travel between different cities throughout the week travelling to the different Hirsch’s stores so I don’t have a specific desk in each store but at our Head Office I have my office which is very minimalistic with no clutter at all as a tidy and well organized desk is more conductive to being more productive.
I found these amazing tips from BondTwenty.com on how to dress your desk for success:
Is your desk a mess? Do you return to more clutter than you remember leaving in the first place?
A disorganized and cluttered workspace can make desk work more irritating, difficult and complicated than it has to be. A tidy, organized workspace is conducive to working productively and maximizing your time and potential.
HAVE A RUBBISH BIN WITHIN REACH
Although it sounds obvious, a rubbish bin is an important organisational tool for your workspace. It acts as a sorting machine, and will help you to avoid those piles of papers stacking up on your work surface. As soon as you no longer need something simply throw it out! You have a limited amount of desk space – so use it wisely. Also, be in the habit of cleaning up throughout the day – throw out lolly wrappers, used stick-it notes, old mail etc.
AVOID EATING AT YOUR DESK
If possible avoid eating messy, juicy, crumby foods at your desk. I like to keep a small bowl of nuts and dried fruit to snack on – it doesn’t take over my desk, get on my computer, nor do I risk ruining important pieces of paper.
In this day and age, printing off documents isn’t necessary. Information is instant and constant, by the time you print something off, it’s generally already become irrelevant. Try to only print off important documents, and keep the printing off of emails etc. to a minimum. Paper is the ultimate clutter generator and I guarantee you don’t know what 75% of the documents are sitting on your desk in disorganised stacks!
