Hirsch’s recently had a request for assistance from the Viva Village in the Alaska Informal Settlement, Mamelodi East, Pretoria.
Said Meleney Kriel, CEO of The Viva Foundation of South Africa: “We are presently feeding 176 children breakfast and lunch every day and have 20 staff members at the centre, with an after school programme and other regular events there, where we serve meals. All this cooking (more than 90 000 meals a year) takes place in a tiny kitchen that we originally built when there were only 22 children. We are slowly, but surely, revamping our kitchen as funding becomes available and we urgently need a large gas stove, with gas oven. There is no electricity in the informal settlement and therefore we can only use gas. “
Hirsch’s and SMEG joined up to support this very worthy cause, and were able to donate a full gas stove to the Village.
Meleney and her ‘cook’ Tebogo Nonyane, together with some of the children from the Viva Village, were thrilled to receive the donation and could not stop expressing their gratitude towards Margaret Hirsch, COE of Hirsch’s and the Management of SMEG for making this possible. “I cannot wait to cook on this stove, I am so happy – thank you, thank you” said a teary-eyed Tebogo.
