Hirsch’s Fourways/Heron-Bridge cook-off
It was that time of the year again for our annual Heron Bridge College cook-off at Hirsch’s Fourways. This year was our 7th time hosting this fantastic event. We took the event to new heights by doing it in conjunction with Guvon Academy. The cook-off consisted out of 2 days off fun cooking (collecting 205 opt-ins in total). We had 99 Grade 11 students divided into teams of 5 where they had to cook a starter and a main with ingredients from a mystery box. One of the team members was responsible to create a mocktail alongside a mixologist expert from Sir Juice to complement their dishes. Spar Broadacres sponsored us with all the ingredients for the two days. Whilst the teams were cooking up a storm, Chef JP from Guvon Academy was entertaining the crowd with exciting cooking demos. Guvon also had students available as mentors for the contestants. Platinum Gold also joined us as the MC’s and created an amazing buzz in the store.
We were privileged to have Norman Brassell (Hirsch’s), Keith Wilke (Heron-Bridge College), Elsu Gericke (Guvon Academy) and Beverly Lupke (Whirlpool) as our judges for the first evening. The judges chose 4 teams who went through to the final round where one of them will be the ultimate MasterChef’s.
Megan Honiball was the winner of the lucky draw for the student package which consisted out of a Defy microwave, a Snappy Chef induction hob, a bed and mattress from Rest Assured/Cloud Nine, a Mellerware breakfast pack and a Hisense bar fridge. During the evening there were numerous spot prizes including Hirsch’s vouchers, cookbooks, Cuisipro Ice Cream makers and a one night stay at Glenburn Lodge & Spa in Muldersdrift compliments of Guvon Hotels and Spas.
There were 3 teams that went onto the final round for the HBC champion title. The 3 teams had to create another starter and a main dish with the mystery box alongside a complimentary mocktail. Our judges for the day were Grant Sandham (Guvon Academy), Chef JP, Pat Tarr (Spar), Norman Brassel (Hirsch’s) and Simon Crane (Heron Bridge). The winning team – Working with Gas walked away as the champions with cookbooks and an R500 Hirsch’s voucher each. The runners-up each won an R300 voucher.
Overall, it was an extremely successful event and definitely worth all the planning and hard work that went into this.
