Mandela day Fun with Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre
Hirsch’s Springfield Park recently joined Ethelbert child and youth care centre for their Mandela day Centenary cook off celebration. Corporates from around Durban joined in for a fun day of cooking , networking and having fun with the kids at the home. Ethelbert was created in June 1907 the centre provides safety and care for 65 youth who have been removed from their family’s because of various abuse , neglect , abandonment and who have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS. The goal of the home is to see the children reunited with their families one day once the parents have been rehabilitated and approved by the court. “Ethelbert’s main priority is to break the cycle of abuse and to build up the self-esteem and confidence of the children in our care” said PRO Tania Steinberg.
The competition is a yearly event and the corporates with their team of Five helpers , which consist of children from the home , are instructed to create a main meal and a dessert for a judging panel. Points are given for creativity , kids interaction ,overall taste and food quality. After the meals are prepared they are taken up to the hall where the corporates serve the kids a nice hot meal and pudding. The Hirsch team made a delectable chicken pasta and a custard tart for dessert and brought along some fun goodies for the kids such as toys , books , skipping rope and some yummy treats. Hirsch’s main aim for the day was to bring smiles to the kids faces, kids were taught fun games as well as how to skip rope “It saddened me that some of these kids have never played with a skipping rope, it was wonderful to teach them a fun game that they can enjoy playing together” said PRO Lindsay Starkey.
The day ended with the awards for the cooking event as well as spending some more quality time with the children. All teams were commended for the participation and creating a wonderful day for the children but it was Bata shoes who walked away victorious.
