Recently Hirsch’s Umhlanga hosted a semi-final for the Hirsch and Defy Junior Super chef competition, aimed at kids between the ages of 8 and 13 with a passion for cooking. The competition is also co-sponsored by Zwilling, Snappy Chef and Green Pan.
Nine contestants battled it out for the top spot – with much encouragement from friends and families.
The children were given a mystery box with a variety of ingredients – and an hour to produce and present a two course meal. They were judged by Larry Ramadhin-Executive Sous Chef of The Oyster Box, Jodi Gillespie-pastry chef, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Chris McDaniel- from the Rainfarm lodge and restaurant , Joani Mitchell- SA Masterchef Finalist.
Commented Hirsch’s Lindsay Starkey “They all put it huge amounts of effort into their prep.and cooked with smiles on their faces. It is Events such as this that Hirsch’s is highly invested in, as it helps boost confidence, passion and dreams in children, and it was wonderful watching them doing something they love. The meals all looked wonderful and the parents were amazed at how well the kids could actually cook on their own. Our winner was an 11 year old Nalani Britz she was shocked at first but afterward she was beaming with excitement!”
