A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP FOR SUMMERHILL HOUSE CHILDREN.
Hirsch’s Homestore’s Ballito and Ashton College teamed up to celebrate World Sleep Day with an unusual, fun and community-driven idea. Together with Cloud Nine and Rest Assured, Hirsch’s branches throughout the country came up with an activation to see how many pupils could fit onto a queen-sized mattress for at least 30 seconds – while raising awareness for a charitable project. Commented Hirsch’s Shane Spencer “The Grade 4 learners at Ashton College had great fun trying to see how many of them could squeeze on to the Rest Assured bed! Ashton college who came second in the region were given mattresses to donate from Cloud Nine and Rest Assured and Hirsch’s homestores to a charity of their choice and a team from each facilitator recently handed them over to Summer Hill House in Etete – a children’s home for orphaned and displaced children which aims to give them a home, a sense of family and a safe space to grow up in.
“Sleep is such an important part of our lives, particularly for young children. When we visited underprivileged pre-schools in the areas in which we operate, we found that the children don’t have anywhere to sleep. Most children stay up until the evening when their parents pick them up and midday sleep is vital for them. ” said Glenda Thompson, Hirsch’s National PR Consultant. “This was the motivation behind the concept and it has worked so well nationally.”
Commented the founders of Summerhill House “One of the simplest pleasures in life, whether you’re a parent or not is the sound of a child laughing. That laugh is the sound of innocence, of beauty, of freedom, of happiness.Sadly, some children are born into a life that negates any of that innocence and beauty. Their parents are gone, they are sick, they are hungry and yet, even those children find a reason to laugh because that’s how we’re made, with happiness born into our hearts, and hope in our hands. At SummerHill our purpose and goal is to create a lifeline, a home for those that want one, a family for those that need one, because this is a place where laughter is heard.”
Summerhill House is always looking for financial assistance or assistance in kind for the sustainability of their homes and development programs – as well as sponsorships of holiday feeding.
If you would like information on how you can help Summerhill House, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Incidentally, they are also looking for volunteers to play games with the children – football, netball etc – over weekend and during the holidays. Contact them if you have time to get involved.
