Recently Hirsch’s Fourways and Weber got together to hold the first of their National Braai Off competitions. To celebrate Heritage month, events will also be held at Hirsch’s Umhlanga on September 15 and Hirsch’s Milnerton on September 30. Weber provided gas braais, a gazebo, their know-how and some lovely prizes. Commented Hirsch’s Sharron Dingle “The three Fourways competitors – Damien Moodley, Ryan Mannie and Ray Naidoo -brought widely differing dishes to the table. Damien showed us how to make a succulent beer chicken smoked in a traditional Weber charcoal braai. It was served with amazing vegetables done on the Weber gas braai and they were cooked to perfection. Ray Naidoo introduced us to his personal recipe of snoek in tinfoil with peppers and glazed with a sweet Blueberry Jam to finish off with a side salad. Finally Ryan Mannie did prawns in a wonderfully mild peri peri sauce and a crisp side salad. Judges looked as every aspect from preparation, effort, presentation and taste and it was incredibly difficult to reach a conclusion and establish a winner as they were so very close. The final winner was the beer chicken done by Damien Moodley which came out delicious and succulent and a recipe that we will definitely be adding this to our own portfolio. Competition was fierce but fun and has definitely put a spring in our step – and set a high tone for us.
